Downtown Line

A poem from a dream.

By Ashwin Narayan and Pratibha

Sunset over a canal, with silhouetted trees and distant buildings.

Near the platform doors I wait,
Next train in 2 minutes,
Say speckled screens, flickering lights,
The train never came.

All the lights are far away,
Even the sun, hanging low,
Long shadows swallow silent streets,
Fading light carves orange slivers
Through concrete jungles

Still, no train.

I cross the platform.
Is there another track here?

The hill is taller now,
Where tracks should be,
A precipitous drop

I teeter at the edge.
The abyss beckons.
I look back on an empty platform
When did the others leave?

There is no way home.
